Saints Essay

The holy and glorious martyr Ludmila of Bohemia the daughter of Slavic Prince. Saint Ludmila was the grandmother of St. Wenceslas. The saint I picked is named St. Ludmila of Bohemia her background is Czech Republic. She was born in Mělník Czech Republic 820 and died in Tetín Czech Republic September 15, 921. She was murdered by two noblemen sent by Wenceslau’s mother Drahomira. Drahomira was jealous of Ludmila`s influence over her son Wenceslaus. He became the next ruler of Bohemia. In Czechoslovakia, Catholic religious orders were banned, and most existing clergy were jailed, sent to labor camps, or forced into military service. Some were even murdered. It was in this climate that some church leaders decided to ordain a few remaining qualified individuals including some women to be priests. St. Ludmila became a Saint because she like Catholic Religion and believed that we should have it in our lives. Ludmila married Borivoj the first Czech prince to adopt Christianity. Even though the people did not accept christianity they build the first christian church near Prague. Ludmila is inspirational that she adopted christian life later in life like I did.

The reason why I picked St. Ludmila is because she comes from the homeland of my family, I have visited her church before when I was in Czech and saw pictures, statues and saw where she had mass. St. Ludmila is inspirational to me because the way she so naturally fulfilled her role as a woman, mother and as an educator in the family, despite the position of a woman having been different in the Early Middle Ages than it is today. Her life was a source of inspiration for the visual arts, too. Medieval and Baroque iconography in particular chose the motif of the grandmother as an educator of the future Wenceslas.

St. Ludmila is also inspirational because numerous healings occurred at her grave when the sick or hurt people would come and visit the grave they would get healed by St. Ludmila. Her body now lays in the city of Prague buried at the St. George church.

What we can learn of the life of St. Ludmila is that don't be afraid to do what you want to do because in her time if you believed in Christianity you would get punished but she still went for it anyways because she had a passion and didn't get anyone tell her what she can and can't do. So something to learn from her life is there is nothing wrong of believing in what you believe in and you should go for it no matter what happens and don't listen to anyone telling you that you can't.
